James Kirk founded Kirk Soaps in New York. In 1859 the business relocated to Chicago where a factory was built where Fort Dearborn had once sat. The factory was lost in the Great Fire and eventually a five story brick building was built on North Water Street. By 1900 Kirk’s was producing 100 million pounds of soap per year.
